I've had a number of people ask me the same question over a few years. There are two options. You either use a gyroscope to stabilise the rocket or you can use a lighter directional gyroscope to find the change of direction and correct it (via a computer) by using fins and servo motors. I guess the wieght of the servo motors would equal the wieght of the mechanical gyroscope. Ametur rockets with gyroscopes have not been well documented.

If anyone finds out more about this please contact me. If anyone wants to give it a go I maybe prepare to sponsor them.
