Question

Asked by: Marsha Warren
Subject: Tops and sound
Question: Do spinning tops produce sound? Will two different types of tops spun at the same speed on the same surface produce the same sound (note, pitch)? If not, what seem to be the deciding factors? Construction material, size?

Yes spinning tops do produce sound. But some can be very quiet.
The sound can occur when it comes in contact with something. This can be as simple as the air on the edge of the top as its spinning or the contact point where it touches the floor.

The shape, size, weight, sharpeness of the point and the floor surface would all change the pitch of the noise. For example a plastic top on a glass surface should be quiet.

Even the speed of the spinning top effects the sound.

Sometimes its the floor/surface can Amplify or absorb the sound.

Hope this helps.
