Question

Asked by: Ted Pittman
Subject: Building a Teststand
Question: Here are the choices I made for building a Test Stand for gyro-propulsion experiments.
Hope this is helpful to others.

I. Gyro Device Size
1. CAD for dimensions of the gyro – both static and dynamic space needed.
2. Stepper motors give complete control of speed, ramping and torque.
3. Pulleys and belts rather than gears. There’s more design tolerance.
4. Framework: bulkheads, threaded rods. I found Plexiglas is stronger than expected.
5. Sensors for rotation and acceleration.
6. Guide lugs: Same as the ones used for launching high-powered model rockets.
7. All the above fits into a cylinder approximately 8x20 inches

II. “The Box”
1. A kitchen cabinet from a large hardware store was ideal. ( 15x12x30 )
2. Cut out windows for observation and video photography..
3. Built shelves to hold aluminum rods for guide lugs to ride on.
4. Cut out the top for engine insertion/removal.
5. Removed front door. Planned to install Plexiglas front instead.
6. Added heavy cement block to reduce vibrations.
7. Secured The Box onto a wheeled cart.

III. Electronics
1. Drivers for the Stepper Motors
2. Power supply
3. Potentiometers for speed control
4. “Marker” button for giving a sync signal to data stream and video.
5. Arnuino mpu board for wiring connections and signals generation.
6. PreAmp boards for collecting rotation and vibration signals. (Mounted in The Box)
7. Software for recording and processing data signals.
8.. Load cell for device weight measurements. (Mounted in The Box)
9. An Oscilloscope is essential for monitoring and capturing fast signals.
10. A rack-mount PC cabinet

IV. Optics
1. Color video camera for close-up shots of device + clock + timer.
2. Painted a grid behind the location where the device would be running.
3. B/W video of overall setup (including me at the controls).
4. Adjustable strobe light for freeze-motion video.
