I've never come across the term gyrometer. If it has been used in the passed it maybe a brand name. A quick search on google didn't bring up anything.

here's an excerpt from Panasonic about how they use gyrometers in their camcorders.

"A gyrometer is a mini-gyroscope that outputs an electronic signal when the camcorder is moved from a stable position. The gyrometer signals are used to electrically position a movable lens assembly 480 times per second so that the image projected onto the CCDs stays centered. Advantages of optical image stabilization are: it works in low light since it is not dependent on the contrast in the digital video image, resolution remains high (90 percent of an uncorrected image), and it works during zoom operations. The disadvantages are that it increases camcorder size, weight, power usage, and cost."
