 The basic concept of a gyro is to negate the pull of gravity. By spinning a mass rapidly the object becomes fixed in space. Whether the gyro is on Earth, the Moon, or in space it can be used to sense movement by referencing another object. There are satellites, in orbit around the Earth, that use a gyro (referenced to a star) for orbital corrections.
